BOA Light Studio designs lighting atmospheres. A multidisciplinary collective at the crossroads between architecture, design and scenography, we create nightscapes: tales of light that make for a memorable and poetic nighttime experience.
Our studio was founded in 2014 by seven partners in Paris and New York who brought together their technical and artistic expertise. We create beauty rooted in functionality.
To us, lighting design is about more than countering obscurity. Our creations combine elegance and innovation to tell a story that is relevant to a place’s spatial, cultural and sensory context.
For each one of our projects, we develop a poetic narration, whether we’re illuminating an office building, a commercial space, a temporary installation or an entire urban landscape.
Our lighting installations get noticed because they sculpt the space, giving it character and providing a unique sensory experience.
Having conducted projects in the USA, the Middle East, China and across Europe, BOA Light Studio has gained international recognition.
We have a global approach. The way a place is lighted concerns everyone, and we want each of our projects to contribute to the ecosystem surrounding them. We also want them to be unique, and therefore fully tailor made. Every building, public place or interior deserves a unique and memorable nighttime experience.
From initial sketches to technical implementation, we work in collaboration with all the involved parties: engineers, project managers, designers… Ideas spring up from all sides, creating new paths to follow.
Our tools include drawings and simulations to materialize our initial ideas, 3D models and plans to stimulate collaborative conception, and ultimately working with contractors and carrying out tests on site for final implementation.
Our know-how enables us to adapt to all projects and all scales. During the project’s initial definition, we strive to push ambitions and boundaries as far as possible. As the project advances, we rely on our agility to integrate all its aspects and come up with technical solutions that will suit its specificities while serving the original artistic intention.
What we believe
To us, nighttime is a shared and often overlooked territory where people, places and wildlife live together with different rhythms and needs. Our objective is to combine these various rhythms and create a dynamic and contextualized narrative that breathes life and an allegorical presence into the city night, as it shifts from the bustling active evening to the urban night of partygoers and late-night workers, and finally into the deep natural night so essential to the well-being of both wildlife and humans.
This means we avoid excessive luminosity and opt for dream-like atmospheres where people can find comfort in the night surrounding them.
This also means we favor a sustainable approach where our creations meet their prime objective of being visible while minimizing light pollution. Our projects favor frugal energy and minimal lighting – with power modulation that can be dialed down to full extinction – and working upstream with manufacturers to create adapted products, as well as with local contractors as much as possible.
